Hospital Health Information Technology (HHIT)

Project Overview

Medication errors are by far the most common of health care errors. Research indicates that among hospitalized patients, errors occur in as many as 20 percent of administered doses of medications, and 7 percent of those errors hold the potential of producing potential adverse drug events (ADEs). Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) is a new technology that improves quality by decreasing the frequency of preventable medication errors and ADEs by reducing reliance on human memory, simplifying and standardizing work processes and increasing the availability of patient-specific and drug-specific information at the time of medication order.

Participating Hospital Goals - Qualidigm works intensively with seven hospitals to:

  • Improve clinical quality and safety by implementing CPOE.

Qualidigm’s Approach

Qualidigm works with hospitals to develop CPOE implementation plans by:

Partnership Building

  • Working with hospital leaders, federal and state agencies and industry associations to create partnerships that expand our collective knowledge and resource to promote quality improvement.

Performance Feedback

  • Administering and analyzing a hospital-specific CPOE readiness survey.
  • Sharing and using results of surveys to develop and manage individual and collective implementation strategies.

Quality Improvement Training and Improvement

  • Sharing effective quality improvement strategies, expertise and educational materials via face-to-face, conference calls and electronic communication.
  • Conducting onsite visits and providing individualized quality improvement support.
  • Assisting with the development of the business case for CPOE implementation.

Marketing and Communications

  • Recognizing outstanding quality improvement efforts through the Qualidigm Quality Awards program.
  • Preparing customizable press releases for local media use that highlight and describe the hospital’s quality improvement efforts.

FAQs

How do I engage hospital leadership in implementing CPOE technology in my hospital?
Because technology implementations often involve change and a significant financial expenditure, it is important to create the business case for implementing CPOE that aligns the benefits of a successful implementation with the vision and mission of the hospital. By tying the CPOE implementation to improved patient safety and quality of care, and increased compliance with best practices and evidence-based medicine, senior administrators and clinicians are more likely to support the implementation and provide authorization to secure all necessary resources.

What are my responsibilities as a participating hospital?
A participating hospital will be asked to:

  • Form a dedicated team for planning and implementing CPOE and other quality improvement strategies.
  • Develop an overall action plan and timeline.
  • Actively participate in all related workgroup events.
  • Share progress, barriers and successes during group meetings, WebEx sessions and conference calls.
  • Secure senior leadership commitment and support.
